8.2.23 PINK MARLENA
Marlena Boedigheimer, also known as “pink marlena”, is a saxophonist, producer, and composer born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. Growing up, she was drawn primarily to rap music, and before picking up the saxophone, Marlena would make beats on a Roland sp404 sampler, collecting ideas from her parents’ old vinyl collection. From a young age, she was interested in the behind-the-beat production styles of Madlib and J. Dilla, whose influences carry on in her compositions to this day. She began playing the saxophone at age 14 when she was entering her first year of high school. It wasn’t until senior year that she auditioned for and joined her school’s jazz band. This was her first real experience playing jazz music, and she fell in love with it instantly. Since then, she’s gone on to study Jazz at the University of Minnesota Duluth under Professor Ryan Frane and Dr. Theodore Schoen, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in 2022. Marlena has also studied with Sue Orfield in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as well as Gabrielle Murphy through the WIJO Mentors Program.
Marlena has performed with several groups as a sideman, including Terrestrial Lifeforms, AfroGeode and the Gemstones, The Andy Peterson Quartet, The Christian Moreno-Cova Jazz Ensemble, and several others. As a leader, she operates under the name “pink marlena”, and is currently working on a variety of albums and projects.
