Zenith City On Tap

Glensheen presents Zenith City On Tap, a series of talks on the history of Duluth by author and historian Tony Dierckins, publisher of Duluth’s Zenith City Press.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7. Local beer and wine available.

February 28: “From Stone to Steel: Twin Ports’ Pioneer Industries”
Both sides of the St. Louis River between Duluth and Superior were once lined with ore docks, coal docks, lumber mills, flour mills, grain terminals, ship-building centers and metal manufacturing plants. From Fond du Lac’ early brownstone quarries of to Morgan Park’s giant Minnesota Steel Plant, this presentation explains the rise and demise of the industries that built the Twin Ports and created Duluth’s East-West divide.

Check out the event series to see each week’s topic.

Moonlight Snowshoe

Join us for a moonlight hike on the 12-acre, lakeside estate at Glensheen with Day Tripper of Duluth as your guide.

This event is SYOS (Bring Your Own Snowshoes)

Kicking off 2018’s Wednesday night events, you will have the chance to explore parts of the Congdon estate not normally traversed by the public. Check out the wooded area next to Bent Brook, and explore the Lake Superior shoreline.

As the chief visionary for the North Shore Scenic Drive, Chester Congdon was big on the preservation of the North Shore’s natural beauty. He embraced Northern Minnesota’s landscape by incorporating his own personal hiking trails on Glensheen’s estate. Plus, what we know today as Congdon Park, was given to the city by Chester with the promise that its cascading waterfalls and wilderness would remain wilderness as a park for the public.

Once you have hiked the snow-covered estate, head down to the lake to warm up next to a cozy bonfire.

  • Please bring your own snowshoes or a good pair of hiking boots! If there is not enough snow, we will still hike the estate via boots.
  • The event is free and open to the public. Guests will meet Day Tripper of Duluth outside the Ticket House at the bottom of Glensheen’s parking lot.
  • RSVP is not required but encouraged. Please mark that you are ‘going’ in the Facebook event if you plan to attend.

Glensheen Christmas PhotoMeet

Glensheen is hosting a Christmas photography event for all.

You don’t need to be an Instagrammer or a part of any club to attend. The event is free, and all photographers are welcome!

UPDATE
Due to overwhelming interest and capacity in the mansion, we are capping the event at the first 75 people. First come, first serve.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that this will enhance the experience for those attending the event. We are so thankful for all who are interested in attending!

If you are unable to attend, we recommend visiting on a Sunday during our self-guided tour hours. Please reach out to us at 218-726-8925 for more information.

The mansion will be open for you to explore and capture our 25+ Christmas Trees, hundreds of feet of garland and, of course, maybe snap a picture of a hidden elf or two.

Please keep in mind that we will be inside the mansion. Glensheen is a museum and we still have our “no touching” policy to best preserve the mansion. We know it can be tough as cozy as the Christmas decor makes it feel. Please be mindful of this with tripods and setting up your shot.

The sun is set to rise at 7:47 am. Feel free to get a good sunrise photo too! As always we encourage you to roam the estate and explore all 12 acres.

We will be ready to go with coffee on from Duluth Coffee Company!

We love to re-share photos from these events on our social media pages! If you are sharing your images on social media please tag @Glensheen and use #glensheenchristmas.

A prize for the Best Photo will be awarded! The best photo will win a Candlelight Christmas Tour for two.

Public tours of the mansion begin at 9:00 am. Therefore, the event will promptly end at 9:00 am. You are welcome to roam the grounds afterward!

Thank you to our friends at the Duluth Superior Camera Club, Destination DuluthMNCommunity Duluth and MNCommunity for partnering with us!

Storm Damage Clean Up

Glensheen needs your help!

In the aftermath of Friday’s storm on 10/27/17, there is quite a bit of clean up on Glensheen’s shoreline and inside the boathouse, that needs to be done. The majority of the work needed is to help pick up sticks and rock that the lake pushed out onto the lawn.

We advise folks to dress warmly and to bring gloves to carry wood and rock.

Everyone who volunteers will receive a free Classic Tour pass for Christmas and hot chocolate.

Thank you ahead of time!

Secrets of Glensheen

Secrets of Glensheen is BACK by popular demand!

Collections Manager, Milissa Brooks-Ojibway, will showcase various objects from the Glensheen collection that have been hidden out-of-sight to visitors.

Milissa is responsible for the proper care and preservation of the objects in the mansion. Therefore, she sees all of the cool and interesting objects in Glensheen’s collection every day. More often than not, these are objects the public rarely has the opportunity to see.

Milissa will give an in-depth history of each object and perhaps even why the Congdon family acquired the item.

Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and get up close to these rarely-seen objects.

Guests will enter at the front door of the mansion. The event will take place in the Amusement Room.
