Concerts on the Pier: Charlie Parr & Red Mountain

On August 3rd, Glensheen concludes its 2016 free Concerts on the Pier series with Charlie Parr opening for Red Mountain.

An easily confused and very shy individual, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota.

Red Mountain is the brainchild of Anton Jimenez-Kloeckl. Since 2007 Red Mountain has been over-writing and under-performing honest music inspired by love, fear, birds, angst, and others.

Free concerts have been happening at Glensheen every Wednesday night in July for many years. However, last year marked the first time all of the bands played on the 100-foot pier extending into Lake Superior. Each of the bands have Duluthian ties making the series a showcase for our region and Minnesota’s talent.

Concertgoers line Glensheen’s Lake Superior shoreline while kayakers and boaters enjoyed the free music from the water. Concerts on the Pier is a celebration of the Lake, local bands, one of Duluth’s historic locations and Minnesota.

History & Decor – Susan Ray-Degges

History & Decor is back!
Part 3 of 3

This time we have brought in interior design historian Susan Ray-Degges to talk about the history of Interior Design.

After the talk guests will be invited to walk around the home with tour guides to items Susan was describing in her talk.

What will she talk about?

What do grasscloth, wainscot, batten paneling, and printed wall coverings have in common?

Most of these wall finishes have been under constant reinvention since their original inception. Come to see how these finishes were used to enrich the interiors of the Glensheen Mansion. As suggested by William Morris, British Arts & Crafts designer, ‘Whatever you have in your rooms think first of the walls for they are that which makes your house and home, and if you do not make some sacrifices in their favour you will find your chambers have a kind of makeshift, lodging-house look about them…

Who is Susan Ray-Degges?

Susan Ray-Degges, Ph.D., CID-MN, ASID
Associate Professor/Interior Design Program Coordinator

Susan has been an interior design faculty member at North Dakota State University for over 24 years. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, Susan successfully passed the NCIDQ in 1991, and became a Certified Interior Designer in 1994. She previously served on the ASID Minnesota Board of
Directors and most recently served on the National Interior Design Educators Council Board of Directors. Susan developed a deep appreciation for historical interiors when she was given the opportunity to complete an extensive study of a historical house as an undergraduate.

She continued to support this love for historical interiors by serving as a docent at the Comstock House in Moorhead, Minnesota, from 1995-2003. Fortunately, Susan shares her passion for the progression of architecture, decorative arts, and furniture styles by teaching historical interiors at NDSU – she has done so for the last 24 years.

The program will begin at 7:00 PM and should conclude by 9:00 PM. This event is free to the public and will be held in the Glensheen Amusement Room, which is located in the lower level of the home.

This event is made possible by a grant from the UMD School of Fine Arts John and Mary Gonska Cultural Fund.
