PhotoMeet at Glensheen

The first Glensheen PhotoMeet of 2018! In celebration of the coming of summer, we invite you to a sunrise PhotoMeet to capture the epic morning magic on the grounds of Glensheen.

The event is free and open to the public.

Coffee from Duluth Coffee Company will be provided.

Sunrise is at 5:29 am on Saturday, May 19th. We’d love for you to join us for a Lake Superior sunrise! If you are not an early bird and opt to skip the sunrise, feel free to come anytime between 5:00 am – 8:00 am.

As always, favorites from the event will be shared (credit is given) on Glensheen’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Please use hashtags, #sunriseatglensheen, and #glensheen. If you are not a social media user, feel free to email photos to Marketing Manager, Jane Pederson at janeped@d.umn.edu for consideration.

The “Best in Show” photo from the event will be awarded a Nooks & Crannies Tour for two. This award is determined by overall social engagement on a photographer’s photo(s) and/or Dan and Jane’s personal preferences. 😉

Also! As a thank you to all photographers, Glensheen is giving photographers FREE Classic Tours on Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th. Simply bring your camera to receive free admission. And sorry, your cell phone doesn’t count.

Minnesota Open House Book Talk

Minnesota has a remarkable array of house museums, each with its own unique history and architectural significance. Minnesota Open House by Krista Finstad Hanson features nearly two hundred of these grand mansions, humble homes, log cabins, frontier forts, and pioneer villages that are open to the public.

Krista Finstad Hanson, the author of Minnesota Open House, will be presenting a book talk Saturday Glensheen’s Winter Garden.

The event is free and open to the public.

Minnesota Open House naturally features Duluth’s majestic Glensheen Mansion, featuring thirty-nine ornate rooms and expansive landscaped grounds making Glensheen the perfect backdrop for a book talk. Other homes showcased in the book are Minneapolis’s stunning Purcell-Cutts House, a showplace of the finely crafted woodwork of Prairie School design and Stevens County’s Trantow Log Cabin, built in the German style with dovetailed log corners.

The book is organized by region and features easy-to-follow maps. This handy guide to historically significant and often breathtaking sites is the perfect road-trip companion. Entries detail each site’s cultural and political import and photographs illustrate key features, from leaded-glass windows to widow’s walks.

Author Bio

Krista Finstad Hanson is a writer and historian. She is the author of two travel guides to museums in historic houses: Minnesota Open House (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2007) and Wisconsin’s Historic Houses and Living History Museums, (Prairie Oak Press, 2000). She has written freelance, nonfiction articles and essays specializing in architectural history, travel, and homes since 1992 for such publications as American Bungalow, Old House Interiors, Style 1900, Minnesota Bride, Midwest Home, Wisconsin West, Ramsey County History and many others.

Free Mother’s Day Tours

With a nod to Glensheen’s matriarch Clara Congdon, we celebrate Mother’s Day with free general admission Tours for mothers on Sunday, May 12th. We think Clara, whose diary is filled with details of caring for sick children and mending clothes, would approve.

Community Day

On Thursday, May 24th Glensheen will host a day of free of Classic Tours to all visitors.

Various attractions in partnership with Visit Duluth and the city of Duluth, are offering a series of “Community Days” that offer free admission and other special offers to tourist attractions in the Twin Ports.
“The goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to benefit from the industry that our community invests in through tourism tax,” Duluth Mayor Emily Larson said in a news release. “Whether you live here, work here or both — we are proud to showcase some of the best Duluth has to offer.”
Glensheen’s complimentary Community Day begins at 9:00 a.m. and the last tour starts at 4:00 p.m. Tickets will only be available in person at the ticket house, located at the base of Glensheen’s parking lot.
 
Tickets are given on a first-come, first-served basis. Early arrival suggested as capacity may be reached.

Shark Watching Society Bonfires

In an effort to keep the waters of Lake Superior shark free, join us every Wednesday night in May, to keep post while enjoying a bonfire on the shore of Lake Superior.

Glensheen is one of the few legal locations for a bonfire on the shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. A perfect Duluth summer night activity at a prime location, right on the shore of Lake Superior.

Kick back and admire the lake with a local beer in hand. There will be a cash bar with beer and wine available for purchase.

It is suggested that guests bring their own chairs and dress accordingly for a lakeside bonfire.

Mouthful of Maple

Join us for the brand new April event series, Mouthful of Maple, brought to you in collaboration with Duluth Grill.

Every Wednesday night in April guests will have the chance to sample four different recipes by Duluth Grill that are made with locally sourced, maple syrup.

Why host a maple syrup event at Glensheen? Over 100 years ago, the Congdon family and the Hartley family would gather to celebrate the coming of spring for the time-intensive process of turning sap water into the sticky substance that we know and love to be… maple syrup.

We are lucky to have Debbie Morrison, the wife of Guilford Hartley’s Great Grandson from Sapsucker Farms giving the Syrup Symposium. Debbie will speak about the process of making syrup, their business and of course their family ties to the Hartleys and Congdon family.

Duluth Grill will give a brief demonstration or maple symposium, featuring a new recipe each week, and provide samples of the maple syrup-infused dish for the crowd. 

Doors open at 6:30 pm. The event is first to come, first served with a capacity of 50 people.
